How to pay less at the dentist

Ask for the cash price

Before any work, ask: "What is your cash price for this visit, and for each treatment you recommend?" Ask for it in writing. Many offices have a lower self-pay price than their full fee.

Ask about payment plans

Ask if the office offers an in-house payment plan with no interest. Be careful with medical credit cards: some charge all the interest back if you miss the promo deadline.

Check Medicaid dental

Many state Medicaid programs cover some adult dental care, and all cover children. Coverage differs by state. Check your state Medicaid office or Medicaid.gov dental care. Children may also qualify through InsureKidsNow.gov.

Get a second plan

For a big treatment plan, a dental school or health center can give a second opinion at a lower fee.
